Skopje Airport or Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is the largest and busiest international airport in the Republic of Macedonia. It receives airlines from many world destinations, including British Airways, Emirates Airlines, Lufthansa Airlines and other domestic Macedonian airlines flies in and out of Skopje Airport. In 2008 the airport handled a total of 652,815 passengers, an increase by 4.1% from the previous year. The airport is expecting up to 1,500,000 passengers in 2009 after the new terminal facility is built. Located 17 kilometers southeast of the national capital (30 minutes drive from the city centre), it is also the hub of MAT Macedonian Airlines. In the area of 50 kilometers there is no other airport. Skopje airport has on its disposal a passenger terminal with an area of 4000 meters , with a capacity of two entrance and two exit gates, which enable servicing of 500 000 – 600 000 passengers annually. The airport platform has a capacity of 15 parking places for commercial and general aviation aircrafts, including the wide body aircrafts. In addition to the domestic airline Macedonian Airlines, there are 10 foreign airlines operating to 15 European destinations at the Skopje airport.
